Sour Jamaican Kush F3:

Since the early 2000’s, Trinity County in Northern California has been home to a large contingent of Hmong people, displaced during the Vietnam War in the highlands of Laos. To its credit, the United States accepted them and today there are large and successful Hmong populations in California, Minnesota and Wisconsin. From my personal experience, these folks are kind, dedicated and some of the best cannabis growers on the planet.

One of the lines the Hmong brought with them was Pineapple Kush, undoubtedly acquired in the Laotian highlands. This is not to be confused with our line of “Pineapple Thai”. This is a different plant altogether. Built like a brick shithouse and able to withstand anything you throw at it, our Nor-Cal Pineapple Kush has stood the test of time, including wildfires and drought. It is the definition of hardy and produces a resin profile you do not commonly find with large format “kush” style plants. Most of all this plant is MASSIVE when run to full term! (Maybe too massive…)

We have been working on refining Dying Breeds’ under-appreciated “Sour Jamaican Lime” for at least four years. Battle proven for producing quality flowers with some amazing lime terp profiles that wanders to hints of green curry with just ridiculous resin production.

Our first objective was to try to tame the massive Pineapple Kush a bit and add a more complex terpene palate to the mix, using our “25/22” (Gelato #25 /Dosidos #22). The 25/22 brought the expected density we wanted and some of the Dosidos #33 dankness you would expect to find in most Nor-Cal Kush. The Pineapple terps still shone through (maybe too much?) and the resin production was still off the charts! However, the form factor was still massive and carried the long closing time forward, two things we really wanted to lose.

So we went back to the workbench and decided that because the Sour Jamaican Lime was infinitely easier to handle and had a more diverse terpene profile, we decided to work it back to our nubile (Nor-Cal Pineapple Kush x 22/25) to reign it in a bit and soften the overwhelming Dole Pineapple dominant terpene profile. Surprisingly, it worked better than we could have expected!

The dominant terps now ran to the exotic, with tropical fruits galore ringing through. The resin production was still epic and even enhanced, and the plant structure had greatly improved – losing a lot of leaf mass and internal branching we really wanted worked out. It was an oddly successful effort; which we had to double down and take to an F3 to ensure it retained the form factor we wanted. Maybe a lot of work for some, but really it was a labor of love, too. Our Sour Jamaican Kush is a crowd pleaser that is our daytime, go-to smoke. It is a winner!

All that work to tame the beast and yet it is still best run in an outdoor cultivation environment, though it will perform well in a greenhouse environment as long as you give it a lot of room. Look for a reasonable 9-week run time and generally a no-headache-growing experience without molds or pests. Highly recommended!
